Open Position
POSTDOC POSITION ON THE EFFICIENT COMPUTATION OF LARGE GWAS
FREE UNIVERSITY OF BOZEN-BOLZANO (UNIBZ), ITALY
The Database Systems Group at UNIBZ invites applications for a Postdoc position in the area of Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS). GWAS test hundreds of thousands of genetic variants across many genomes to find those statistically associated with a specific trait or disease, which is computationally very expensive. The aim of this research is to develop efficient algorithms for the computation of these associations. They should significantly reduce the computational burden while maintaining a high accuracy, thereby supporting explorative data analytics on very large GWAS data.
The research work is part of a joint project with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, the Technical University of Munich, and EURAC Research. Research visits at the partner institutions are foreseen.
We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a solid background in databases and a deep interest in developing algorithmic solutions for GWAS in an interdisciplinary team. In addition, good language skills in English, oral and written, are expected. A Master is required for the position, but not a PhD.
The initial appointment is for 1.5 years with the expectation of extension up to a total of three years given satisfactory performance.
Interested candidates should send asap an email including a CV to Prof. Johann Gamper (johann.gamper@unibz.it).
